My Loved One is Talking About Suicide. What Should I Do?

Have you been in this kind of situation before?

Even when you have the best intentions, you could find yourself fumbling for words when someone confides in you that they are struggling with their mental health.

Yes, it can be scary to talk to someone who has suicidal feelings – let alone a friend or a family member. But doing so can really make a difference, and literally save a life.

So, if a loved one tells you that they are thinking of ending their life, here are a few tips to help you handle those conversations.

Tip #1: Take them seriously

If somebody around you talks about wanting to die, take it very seriously.

Don’t call them a drama queen, don’t call it a joke. Don’t brush them off as simply wanting to gain sympathy or attention. They are reaching out for help. Taking action is always your best choice.

Tip #2: Do not judge

Here’s a myth: People who talk about suicide won’t actually do it.

But here’an alarming truth: people who talk about suicide sometimes act on it. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) says that the majority of suicides have been preceded by warning signsincluding verbal or behavioral signs. It is better to err on the side of caution instead of judging them.

Also, do not blame your loved ones for how they feel. Speaking up about it may be a huge step for them already.

Tip #3: Start a conversation

Have the initiative to ask open-ended questions that encourage them to talk. A simple “How are you feeling?” could mean a lot.

Your loved one is totally overwhelmed by their current situation and is unsure of how to express their feelings nor seek helpWhether they gave subtle hints or mentioned suicide directly, calmly ask what is happening and assure them that you are willing to listen and you care.

Tip #4: Don’t skirt around the topic of suicide

Contrary to popular belief that talking about suicide only encourages the deed, WHO says that it is okay to talk about it.

Talking about suicide can reduce their anxiety and helps your loved one feel understood. So, if you feel that your loved one might be suicidal, don’t be afraid to use the word “suicide”. Don’t hesitate to ask direct questions such as: “Are you having suicidal thoughts?” “What are the reasons why you don’t want to live anymore?”

Initiating the topic, being direct, and letting them know that they can open up to you can be a huge relief for themMore so, direct questions are more likely to bring about direct responses.

Tip #5: Seek help

Don’t try to handle the situation all by yourself. Encourage them to seek help from a professional – like a doctor, a mental health professional, or a counselor.

But if your loved one is in imminent danger, don’t leave them alone. Seek help and call emergency hotlines, such as Hopeline Philippines’ 24/7 hotlines: 0917-558-4673 (Globe), 0918-873-4673 (Smart), 02-88044673 (PLDT), 2919 (toll-free for Globe and TM).

Although the Filipinos are often portrayed as among the world’s happiest and most resilient people, the fear of the unknown and the uncertainty of the future amid pandemic might trigger negative feelings in anyone.

If your loved one talks about suicide, know that emotional support from people who matter to them can prevent suicide. Gently assure them that you got their back and that things can get better as you seek help.

Most importantly, pray that your loved one would encounter God’s lovehealing, and light even in their darkest days.

We want to pray for you and your loved one!

Together, let’s lift your worries to God. You may call the CBN Asia Prayer Center at 8737-0700 anytime.

13 Reasons Why We Can Hold On to Life

If you’re reading this, it’s not too late for you.

In a world that is full of challenges, uncertainty, pain – and now, a global pandemic – it is easy to forget God’s beautiful promises for you and just give up.

The good thing is: God never gives up on you!

When you got a number of reasons to give up, God gives you 13 reasons and more to hold on to life and keep goingTake a moment to soak in these 13 promises that prove there is hope in Him.

1. God loves you.

People who have been hurt so deeply tend to feel that God doesn’t love them anymore. Truth is, Your Heavenly Father loves you so much that no anxiety, depression, or struggle can separate you from Him!

“Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)

2. God is with you.

Do you feel like the world has turned its back on you and you have no one to turn toDon’t be deceived by what you feel. You are not aloneYou don’t have to fear for He is with you wherever you go.

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. (Isaiah 41:10)

3. God hears you.

He knows every single concern you have. Go ahead. Tell Him everything that is causing you so much pain. He hears you whenever you cry, and He is ready to wipe away all your tears.

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. (1 John 5:14)

4. God’s plans for you are good.

It’s easy to dismiss God’s love when there’s so much pain around, right?

You ask, “Can anything good come out from this suffering?” The answer: He already declared hope and victory upon your life, and you should, too! Trust and see that His plans are to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)

5. Pain is temporary.

No matter how overwhelmed you are right now with your situationknow that it will come to pass. Your weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning (Psalm 30:5).

It might be difficult to believe at first, but God won’t allow you to remain hopeless for so long.

6. Your life has a greater purpose.

Don’t fall to the lie that your life doesn’t matter. You don’t just exist – you are created and are alive for greater meaning and purpose! And as long as you are still breathing, God’s not done with you yet.

But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations. (Psalm 33:11)

7. God promises peace.

If your worries and problems make you feel restless, Philippians 4:7 promises that God gives the kind of peace that cannot be taken away, And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

8. God will strengthen you.

Do you feel weak? Remember that God gives power to the faint and to those who have no might He increases strength (Isaiah 40:29). In every season, He promises to help you.

9. God forgives you.

Are you crippled by sins and you’re afraid that nobody can accept you anymore? Don’t be afraid! There is no shame nor condemnation in God.

He is forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to Him (Psalm 86:5). Call on Him now and receive His mercy!

10. God makes a way.

Are you in a bad place right now? May you be comforted that even when the circumstances seem impossible, Your Heavenly Father will make a way. He is moving in your life, right here, right now.

“Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” (Isaiah 43:19)

11. God heals.

He is not just close to the brokenhearted, He heals them and binds up their wounds (Psalm 147:3).

No matter how deep your physical and emotional wounds are, God can heal and restore you from the inside out.

12. God knows your pain.

Isn’t comforting to know that someone out there understands how you feel? Jesus knows how to feel for you because He Himself suffered betrayal and physical pain. Therefore, He knows how to comfort you! When He promised, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted,” (Matthew 5:4), you can stand on His Word, confident that He will fulfill it.

13. God promises eternity.

Sometimes, you find yourself too caught up in today’s problems that it’s hard to see tomorrow’s promises. 2 Corinthians 4:17 reminds that despite the troubles, there is an eternal glory waiting for you, “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.”

If you’re reading this, it’s never too late for you.

Hang in there! Hold on to life because your suffering, no matter how deep and painful, is not permanent. Open your Bible and open your heart to the thousands of beautiful promises He has for you. No matter the weather, His promises would carry you above any storm – He’s done it before, and He will do it again.

Are you having a hard time believing in God’s promises? Allow us to pray for you. Call us at 8737-0700 or send in your prayer requests to the CBN Asia or The 700 Club Asia Facebook page.

Not all Heroes Wear Capes, Some Wear PPEs | Health Workers’ Day

Behind her surgical mask, nurse Divina looked at the patients with tears streaming down her face. It’s hard to hold back her emotions while seeing other people suffer.

As a Filipino nurse in Bergamo, a city in Italy with the highest number of people infected with COVID-19, Divina Guerrero witnesses the heartbreaking battle of the patients they serve. Every day, she gears up for tough battle each time she puts on her protective suit, face mask, and other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

“I witnessed how the patients suffered from COVID-19. I saw them entering the hospital where they don’t get the chance to see their families anymore – until the day they die,” Divina recalled. “Whenever I see the painful separation of patients and families, that’s when I really break down and cry.”

Divina considers the current pandemic as the toughest challenge in her 28 years as a health workerDue to the risk of her chosen profession, Divina’s family pleaded for her to stop working and look after her own well being.

She admits that fear overtakes her sometimes, but her calling to serve people proves to be stronger than the pandemic. To health workers like her, this season of testing is also an opportunity to see God’s miracles even in the toughest times.

“I see people fighting for their lives. When patients open their eyes or move their hands, it’s like God is giving signs and is making us realize that hope is possible even during this time, said Divina, who shares that such occasions give her a positive disposition.

Divina courageously wears her protective suit and face mask each day knowing that the Lord continues to strengthen and protect her amidst the crisisArmed with prayer each time, she gears up ready to conquer the virus and help flatten the curve.

“God does not allow fear to stay in my mind. He helps me stay positive that I would remain free from the virus,” says Divina.

Divina is one of the many health workers who selflessly brave the unseen enemy in the world right now. They are the ones who always put their lives on the line with hopes of saving others.

This Health Workers’ Day, the world continues to witness their importance more than ever. Let’s continue to recognize, honor, and pray for all the devoted health workers around the globe.

Dear health workers, thank you for continuing your heroic deed. The whole world is grateful for your dedication, compassionate hearts, and courageous spirits!

Most importantly, God sees you and cares for you. May you find comfort as you seek Him, for He is the greatest Hero who will guard you all the days of your life, as said in Philippians 4:6-7,

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

5 Simple Habits to Strengthen Relationship with your Child

Are you having a hard time connecting with your kids?

True as they say, strong relationships don’t just happen. You need wisdom and intentional efforts to make it flourish.

To help your parent-child relationship flourish, here are 5 habits to strengthen your bond, from CBN Asia Holy Week special Suklob:

 1Spend time together

Spending quality time with each other is essential to bonding and forming good character. Perhaps, it’s time to limit your phone use and use that extra time to spend with your child.

Nett Gochuicoplayed by actor Kristoffer Martin in TanikalaI presents Suklobfelt neglected when his father refused to spend time with him. Their bond started to grow only when they learned the importance of hanging around each other.

Deuteronomy 6:5-7 also pointed out the importance of spending time with your child to hone godly characterLove the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

2. Use kind words

In SuklobNett’s father physically and verbally abused him, scarring his childhood forever.

Before you talk to your child, bear in mind that kind words bring life, but cruel words crush one’s spirit(Proverbs 15:4). Know that you can always give correction without destroying their hearts and discipline them without crushing their spirit.

3Believe in your child’s potential

Nett’s endless yearning for fatherly love, approval, and support continued even till his adult life. He found the validation and affection he needed from other people because he never heard it from his own parents.

Would you want your child to look for affection elsewhere? Tell them that you appreciate them and that you support their endeavors. Don’t just show – tell. Let them hear and see that you believe in their full potential.

4. Welcome emotions

Believing that no one listens to him, Nett kept his emotions bottled up for many years. Those negative emotions and unmet hunger for love turned into anger and unforgiveness toward his parents.

Welcoming your child’s emotions helps them consider the needs and feelings of others, too. When their feelings are acknowledged and respected, they will be more open and confident to go through the many seasons of life.

Ask God to give you a listening ear and an understanding heart, and He will give it to you, as promised in Matthew 7:7, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”

5. Practice forgiveness

Not everyone has the strength to forgive instantly. Don’t worry, God understands you.

Yet He wants to tell you that there is healing in His name and that you’re already forgiven for all the wrongs you have done. Because you received forgiveness, you can now overflow with love and forgive others as well, such as your own family.

Meanwhile, children look up to their parents as their superheroes, their role models. Thus, showing them how to forgive could help them forgive more and strengthen your bond as you cultivate this habit in your household.

“In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness.” (Titus 2:7)

Longing for a perfect family?

That doesn’t exist. God doesn’t intend families to be perfect, but to be Christ-like. Surrender your parenting to your Heavenly Father and ask Him to give you the wisdom, the heart, and the character of a good and loving parent.

Are you dealing with family problems right now? Allow us to pray for you. You may send your prayer requests to the CBN Prayer Center or call 8-737-0-700 and find encouragement today.

Is This How My Life Would End?

As the number of COVID-19 patients continues to rise, you might be questioning God the same way Fely Dait did. She uttered these words when her life was in danger.

Before that encounterFely lived a life totally disregarding God’s existence. She sought what she wanted and abused her own body by being a chain-smoker. Not a day went by that she won’t give in to her vices.

However, the day came when she had to face its consequences. Fely was hospitalized for months and experienced extreme difficulty in breathing and speaking. It was the turning point of her life.

While thinking about her children, she fell on her knees and asked for God’s mercy and forgiveness.

Lord, is this how my life will end? If this is just a test from You, please transform my life completely. If You’ll give me another chance to live, I will not abuse my body anymore. I repent for not believing in You, that I had to suffer a lot before surrendering my life to You,” Fely saidbursting into tears as she recalled her past.

Along with her repentance is a newfound, unshakeable faith that God can heal her. On her road to recoveryshe tried her best to live her life the way God wants. Fely started supporting God’s work even when she’s not completely healed yet.

She wholeheartedly donated to the CBN Asia, believing that her simple offering would reach those who are in dire needI donated to CBN Asia because I saw how they help the underprivileged.

Meanwhile, Fely faced another struggle when the doctors found out a blood clot in her brain, requiring her to undergo a major medical operation. It was fatal. It could end her life right then but her faith in Jesus remained unshaken – until she heard a piece of incredible news.

“The doctor canceled my operation and told me that I am so blessed. My arteries returned close to normal and I don’t need the surgery anymoreThat very moment, I cried and praised God for saving me!” Fely exclaimed.

After that miracle, blessings outpoured Fely’s life. God revived her careergave her a new business, and helped provide for her son’s education until the latter finished his studies.

Blessed abundantlyFely now serves as a vessel of God’s blessings to other people, especially in their church.

Like Fely, are you anxious right now and don’t know what to do? Are you wondering if this is the end of it all?

Fear notGod is in control. He wants you to hear His message in 2 Chronicles 7:14-15, “Then, if my people, who bear my name, will humble themselves, pray, seek my face and turn from their evil ways, I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin and heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears will pay attention to the prayer made in this place.

These trying times, allow your Heavenly Father to enter your life. Ultimately it is Him who can save you from the things that make you anxious. God is the best refuge from all the worries of this world, and He is waiting for you to come to Him.

Are you distressed and in need of someone to encourage you? You may send us your prayer requests through the CBN Asia Prayer Center or call 8737-0700 and we would love to pray for you.

Is It Really Possible to Heal Past Wounds?

Verbal abuse, they say, cuts deeper than physical pain. But, imagine how worse it can be if you suffered both.

Is healing still possible? Can you really heal from that painful past that prevents you from living your life today?

Yes. Take it from Mary Jane’s story.

Mary Jane is an intelligent teacher, a loving mother, and a faithful wife. However, her seemingly wonderful world dimmed when she experienced cruelty at the hands of her own husband.

With every slap and bruise, she endured from the man that was ought to protect her from harm, the battered wife was made to believe that she is unworthy of love.

“He made me feel that I was worthless,” said Mary Jane, recalling how her husband treated her during the first years of their marriage.

Things got worse for Mary Jane when she gave birth to her second sonVictorio, who was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition. Being in an abusive relationship and being pained while seeing her son ill led Mary Jane into thinking that her whole life revolved around pain and suffering.

In her frustration, she uttered, I am sorry, but please tell me, Lorddid you give me my son so I can have a reason to live or did you senVictorio to punish me?”

While hungry for answers, Mary Jane was able to find encouragement through watching The 700 Club Asia regularlyOne night, after praying with the program’s host, she decided to call the CBN Asia Prayer Center.

The program and the people I talked to gave me a renewed hope. They made me realize that our God is a God of grace and blessings,” Mary Jane pondered.

For the sake of their child, Mary Jane and her husband set aside their conflicts. They surrendered to God and allowed Him to reign over their lives. Eventually, the couple’s relationship was restored. God heard their fervent prayers and even miraculously healed Victorio.

We were not aware of it, but God was already moving in our lives. He restored everything,” Mary Jane ended.

Like Mary Jane, do you wonder if it is really possible to heal from past wounds?

The Word has given us an answer in Psalm 147:3, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

Your wounds are not hidden from God. He sees each one of them – may it be physical or emotional! He knows that your pain can be overwhelming, yet He promises to heal you and bind up your wounds.

Let Jesus heal your brokenness. Surrender your life to Him to experience His sustaining grace and be amazed at how He can turn everything around in your life.

Are you ready to experience God’s healing? You may call the CBN Asia Prayer Center and we would love to pray for you.

Do You Want to be Accepted?

Youth, beauty, and talent – Ney Leyva already got everything she needs to reach her ambitions and secure her sister’s future.

After being raised solely by their grandmother, Ney shouldered the responsibility of being the family’s breadwinner. She worked as a professional dancer.

However, when the local dance scene industry unfortunately plummeted, Ney suffered a huge financial loss. She then met a man who could give her the financial security she needed.

“I was tempted by my friends to have a relationship with him. Getting him felt like a challenge to me,” Ney recalled.

She was lured into thinking that cohabitating with a man will give her security.

After a while, Ney’s boyfriend got her pregnant. She thought it will make their lives happier.

But, they lost the baby.

After the tragedy, her boyfriend left Ney. Her world turned upside down.

She felt like she was drowning in struggles. She resorted to drinking alcohol and taking illegal drugs which eventually ruined her relationship with her family.

“It was too painful. I felt like I had no one to turn to,” Ney cried.

One day, while still drowning in despair, Ney fell down their house’s staircase. In a flash, she saw darkness surrounding her.

It became the wake-up call she never thought she needed. It dawned on her that the life she was living then was not the life she dreamt of.

A neighbor reached out to Ney and patiently introduced the Word of God to her thereafter. Upon knowing Jesus, her thirst for acceptance was quenched. The love of God helped her turn her back from addictions.

“Words aren’t enough to express my gratitude to God. I can’t thank Him enough for the good life He has given me now,” Ney said, smiling.

Secured in the kind of love that accepts her, no matter what she has done, Ney has now built a beautiful family and continues to honor the Lord.

“I knew now why my first relationship didn’t work out. It was a wrong one,” Ney pondered.

Like Ney, are you looking for acceptance and validation from the people around you?

Perhaps, you are looking in the wrong places.

Isaiah 43:4 says, “Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life.”

Do you want to feel accepted? Look to Jesus.

You are valuable in His eyes that He traded everything in exchange for your life. Whenever you feel unloved and unaccepted, may you be reminded that Jesus loves you, accepts you wholeheartedly, and looks at you as His precious and honorable child, no matter what you’ve gone through. Fret not! His grace is ready to meet you right where you are because you already have God’s acceptance.

Are you ready to feel the unending grace of Jesus Christ in your life? Visit the CBN Asia website and take your first step to peace. If you need someone to talk to, you may call the Prayer Center and we would love to pray for you!
