5 Tips to Successful Money Management in Marriage | Beyond Small Talk

“For richer or for poorer, for better or for worse…”

Truth be told, there are marriages that suffer for worse because of poor money management. It might be because of failed expectations, unclear priorities, or different family backgrounds on handling money.

So, how should husbands and wives manage their finances?

To avoid headaches and arguments, Beyond Small Talk hosts Peter Kairuz, Marvin Germoand Randell Tiongson share 5 practical tips on successful money management:

Tip #1: Define your roles

Who should handle the money? Should it be the husband or the wife?

In the Filipino culture, it is a norm that the wives handle the money. But according to Randell, handling money must be conjugal. It is a matter of defining roles on who pays for what or who does what.

Who, then, manages and executes the budgeting?

It should be the one who is more disciplined, wise, and reliable,” Randell suggested.

Tip #2: Be transparent

One of the most important things spouses can do to manage finances effectively is to be open and honest about it with each other.

As a start, list down all your expenses to have an overview of where your money goes and avoid unwanted surprises in the futureAt the end of the day, it all boils down to proper budgeting.

Tip #3: Combine all your resources

When you and your spouse got married, the two already became one. This is also true when it comes to your finances. You must combine both of your resources and treat your money as one. Practice conjugal spending.

Therefore, before making any decision on that conjugal money, it should be agreed on by both sides.

Tip #4: Give yourselves an allowance

While it is essential to manage your money jointly, it is also good to give yourselves allowance that you can spend for your personal needs or wants – after you have addressed your financial responsibilities.

Just make sure that your spouse knows where that allowance goes, which leads you to Tip #5.

Tip #5: Let your spouse know about your expenses

Regardless of the amount, it is crucial that your spouse knows all about your cash flow.

Asking their permission and mutually agreeing on how you spend the money is one way to show your spouse that you respect and value them.

Budgeting and setting financial goals in your marriage may sound difficult but they don’t have to be. It shouldn’t be about the money – it should be about communication, mutual respect, and love.

Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.” (Colossians 3:14 NLT)

Debunking 10 Common Myths on Mental Health – Beyond Small Talk

Judged. Mocked. Discriminated.

These are what people with mental health struggles deal with every day because of stigma.

In fact, the Department of Health, as cited by Philippine Star in their article DOH: It’s time to talk about, address depression made an alarming statement, “We need to start talking about depression to end the stigma surrounding mental health because, when left unattended, it can lead to suicide.”

Learn, unlearn, and relearn the truths about mental health so you can help your struggling friend, workmate, or family member

Here’s what Beyond Small Talk hosts Peter Kairuz, Sonjia Calit, and psychotherapist Zenia Panahon have to say regarding 10 common myths surrounding mental illness.

Myth #1: Mental health problems can only be experienced at a certain age.

Truth: Mental health problems could manifest at any age. According to Mayo Clinic in their article Mental illness in children: Know the signs, children can develop the same mental illness such as anxiety disorders, Schizophrenia, and Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and the like as adults.

Myth #2: People with mental health struggles are violent and unpredictable.

Truth: Not all who have mental health problems act violently. It still varies on the condition and as MentalHealth.gov says in their article Mental Health Myths and Facts, “only 3%–5% of violent acts can be attributed to individuals living with a serious mental illness.”

Myth #3: People with mental health struggles cannot deal with jobs and/or school.

Truth: A lot of people with mental health issues are highly functional and productive members of society. This is why you should be careful to watch out for warning signs of mental problems in your loved ones.

Myth #4: Personality flaws are often caused by mental health issues. You could snap out of it over time.

Truth: Mental health issues can be sourced from different factors such as genetics, environment, socioeconomic standing, and temperament, says Zenia Panahon. Also, you can’t just snap out of it. You need professional help and ongoing family support which are both vital toward healing.

Myth #5: Once you experience mental health problems, you will never get out of them.

Truth: Mental illness is treatable. If you seek help and gain support, you can recover.

Myth #6: Taking the pill is the only answer.

Truth: There are some who need medication, but others recover from mental health issues with the help of friends, family, and health professionals.

Myth #7: Its impossible to prevent mental illness.

Truth: You cannot really control life’s trials and challenges, so there are times that it may push you to your limit. But, Mayo Clinic explains in Mental Illness that “If you have a mental illness, taking steps to control stress, to increase your resilience and to boost low self-esteem may help keep your symptoms under control.”

Myth #8: Mental illness is a form of brain damage.

Truth: Brain damage is physical. Mental health is how you feel, behave, and think as a person.

Myth #9: I can’t do anything for those who are experiencing mental health issues.

Truth: You can do something about it by being a good support system to them. Show your support by learning how to deal with your family members who have mental health struggles and accompanying them when seeking professional help, Zenia Panahon explained.

Myth #10: If I seek help, others would think of me as crazy.

Truth: When you seek help, you are investing in yourself, says Zenia Panahon.

4 Ways to Support Loved Ones with Mental Health Struggles – Beyond Small Talk

Anyone can have mental health struggles and it can be difficult to recognize.

Unlike a physical wound that is easy to spot, mental struggles are internal wars hidden behind a smile, a hello, and the telltale phrase “I’m okay.”

According to Mayo Clinic, some of the warning signs you should watch out for are “excessive fears or worries, or extreme feelings of guilt, significant tiredness, low energy, and inability to cope with daily problems or stress.”

If you recognize these symptoms from a friend or family member, check out these tips from Beyond Small Talk hosts Peter Kairuz, Sonjia Kakilala and psychotherapist Alain Dizon to know how you can better support them in their journey.

Make the person feel that nothing has changed

You might feel awkward when approaching them, but just relax. Make them feel that you’re the same person they have known.

Create a safe place for them to unload and share their struggles without judging nor condemning them.

Ask them how you could help

It’s okay, to be honest, and to admit that you don’t know what to do, so ask them how you could be of help. Always take the cue from the person.

Tell them your limitations and boundaries when helping, but assure them that you’ll journey with them to recovery.

Learn how to listen

Avoid acting like an expert by trying to fix your loved ones’ problems. What they need is your heartfelt presence and listening ear to make them feel that you genuinely care.

Also, don’t force them to speak if they are not yet ready to open up. Just make yourself available whenever they are comfortable to finally speak.

Educate yourself

One of the biggest challenges that people with mental problems have to deal with is stigma, but educating yourself will help you how to better relate to them and provide the best assistance.

Did these tips help you? Feel free to comment on the online discussion of Beyond Small Talk!

Struggling to Forgive your Parents? Here are 3 Steps to Help You

Are you angry with your parents? Taking care of a longtime resentment toward what they did in the past?

What’s stopping you from letting it go?

Forgiveness isn’t easy, especially when the pain is just too deep, and it came from the people who were meant to protect you.

However, God wants you to forgive and honor your father and mother (Ephesians 6:2), that you may live a good life – with a heart free from any burden.

Here are 3 steps to help you begin healing and forgivingfrom CBN Asia Holy Week special Suklob:

Step 1: Acknowledge the pain

If you’ve already forgiven someone, you won’t remember the offense.

Have you heard this phrase before? Forgiveness is not a denial. You shouldn’t pretend that the offense did not happen. You don’t have to forget it completely.

The first step toward your healing is recognizing the fault and accepting that it really happened.

Nett Gochuico, played by actor Kristoffer Martin, suffered verbal and physical abuse at the hands of his own father and felt neglected by his mother. He grew up harboring hate for both of his parents. He only started to forgive them when he acknowledged the pain they caused him.

Think of the offenses your parents may have committed against you and surrender them to God. Ask Him to heal each and every offense that keeps you from forgiving.

Step 2: Choose forgiveness.

In Suklob, Nett has decided to forgive his father after realizing that it is the will of God and that his anger does nothing but harm his family. Despite being treated badly, he took the courageous step of breaking free from his cruel past and choosing forgiveness.

If you keep on waiting for the feeling of forgiveness to come, it might not come. Forgiveness is not a feeling but a decision to makeIt might not be easy, but the Lord can help you along the process. Ask Him to bless you with a forgiving heart and acknowledge that you cannot do it on your own.

What wounded you doesn’t have to hold you foreverChoosing forgiveness is choosing peace.

Step 3: Initiate forgiveness.

When you’re hurt by your parents, you want them to own up to all their wrongs and apologize to you. But what if they don’t? Healing then would be difficult.

As Nett chose to spentime with his father, it gave him an opportunity to know him more, and understand that his father was hurt too. He recognized his father’s goodness that was pushed aside by pain. Nett put an effort to sit down with him, talk about his childhood wounds, and wholeheartedly initiate forgiveness to his father. He even brought his father to the saving love of God!

Remember, to forgive is not to tolerate the bad habits or hurtful actions, rather, it’s freeing yourself from its bondage. Don’t be afraid, God has planted the good seed of forgiveness in your heart and He will help you through.

You can’t change your past. But here’s the good news: the tale of the past pain doesn’t have to be in your future. Have faith that God has the power to heal you from any emotional trauma, free you from your emotional prison and turn your painful past into good!

As Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

Are you struggling to forgive your parents right now? We’d love to pray for you. Send usyour prayer requests and visit The 700 Club Asia YouTube channel for inspiring stories of forgiveness and reconciliation.
