When Hunger Knocks, We Respond with Much-Needed Relief and Prayers

Everyone is affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, but not all are affected in the same way.

Low-income families and communities in remote areas of our country are especially hit hard by the economic effects of the pandemic. Hunger and starvation are the bigger concerns for them, even more than the coronavirus.

When Hunger Knocks, We Respond with Much-Needed Relief and Prayers

Day by day, food insecurity intensifies. Poor households plunge deeper into poverty. The most vulnerable among us become even more vulnerable and in need of emergency food assistance.

To give you a clearer picture, a survey of the Department of Science and Technology Food and Nutrition Research Institute revealed that 62% of households experienced having little to no food amid the pandemic.

This alarming data has confirmed the magnitude of the hunger emergency gripping our kababayans. And while you are reading this article, the numbers continue to rise.

Do you know that with your help, we can support our most vulnerable kababayans and ease their suffering?

When hunger knocks, we respond with much-needed relief and prayers!

The residents of Santa Maria, Laguna witnessed our response to their great need when CBN Asia’s humanitarian arm, Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines, visited their community last weekend.

When Hunger Knocks, We Respond with Much-Needed Relief and Prayers

Relief operations could not reach Santa Maria because of the community’s remote location. Residents needed to hike or ride horses for hours to reach the town proper. Children had to cross nine rivers every day just to go to school!

With the help of faithful partners like you and the DLL/SAGAD Off-Roaders group, the Operation Blessing team was able to brave the rough trails and heavy rains to get to Santa Maria!

When Hunger Knocks, We Respond with Much-Needed Relief and Prayers

Hundreds of families received food items, hygiene kits, and cleaning materials. More than the material relief, the residents also had the opportunity to hear the comforting, saving love of Jesus through the team.

When Hunger Knocks, We Respond with Much-Needed Relief and Prayers

“Everyone is struggling each day to survive. That’s why it is a huge blessing for them to receive this kind of help. They are very happy to be one of the beneficiaries of Operation Blessing,” shared Teacher Noel, one of the teachers who helped organize the relief operation.

When Hunger Knocks, We Respond with Much-Needed Relief and Prayers

Your generosity makes it possible for Operation Blessing to reach our most vulnerable kababayans and respond with much-needed relief and prayers. Do you want to bless more families in this time of need?

Through Your Help, Healthy Days are Ahead for Filipino Children!

Sometimes, a warm meal can change a life.

The 7-year-old Bernardo Ongcoy can attest to that.

Sometimes, a warm meal can change a life. The 7-year-old Bernardo Ongcoy can attest to that. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the little boy and his father would pick talbos ng kamote (sweet potato tops) from their backyard so they would have something to eat for the day. Life was already hard for Bernardo’s family. His father Romanito makes charcoal for a living, and no matter how much charcoal he makes, his income is not enough to cover their basic needs, let alone buy nutritious meals for his kids. “Sometimes we don’t even eat. Rainy days are the worst, because we wouldn't know where to get food. My wife and I are doing our best to provide for our son, but life is really hard for us,” Romanito said. Bernardo’s family belongs to the Dumagat tribe residing on the mountains of Puray in Rodriguez, Rizal. Their community’s location is far from better-paying job opportunities and other essential services. Because they could not afford healthier or even enough food, Bernardo and his brother Miguel became undernourished. “If my papa stops making charcoal, we would have nothing to eat. I get sickly whenever I am hungry,” Bernardo narrated. His mother Vilma hopes that one day, God will hear all her prayers and bless her beloved children. “I am sad about our condition. I would just pray, ‘God, please provide food for my children so that they won’t experience hunger anymore,’” Vilma lamented. They were already struggling to survive each passing day, and as soon as the pandemic razed the country, it became even harder to know where their next meal is coming from. Thanks to you, Bernardo and his brother can enjoy warm, nutritious meals even during the pandemic! Through your partnership with Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines, CBN Asia’s humanitarian arm, Bernardo and his fellow Dumagat kids receive support through the ministry’s Bless-a-Child program. Through Bless-a-Child, undernourished children like Bernardo enjoy healthy lunches every day, free medical checkup and medicines on a regular basis, as well as free primary education and values formation support. Their parents are also taught how to prepare nutritious yet budget-friendly meals for their children. “We are so grateful for Operation Blessing’s feeding program! My children are always full, their weight improved, and they are now more active,” his mother Vilma shared. Bernardo is now feeling happy, and full. Happy to know that there are people out there who care for them, and full because of the nutritious meals he enjoys every day! “We used to experience hunger, now we don't. Thank you so much for your help, Operation Blessing!” he said with a smile. Sometimes, a warm meal can change a life. Is there Blessing in Giving?

Is there Blessing in Giving?

For pre-school teacher Sharon Pagang, the answer will always be a resounding yes.

Sharon first learned the value of giving from her parents. This lesson stayed with her as she grew up and had a family of her own.

Is there Blessing in Giving?

One evening, Sharon and her husband Jovenal chanced upon The 700 Club Asia. They saw the many struggling families helped through Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines (OB) and it touched their hearts. Without any hesitation, the couple heeded the call to help through giving.

Is there Blessing in Giving?

“My husband and I were encouraged by the stories of people who were touched by God’s faithfulness. That night, we decided to give to Operation Blessing,” Sharon recalled.

Like Sharon, do you long to give whenever you hear and witness the struggles of others?

It is easy to be a blessing to others when life is all good and easy, but what about when it’s hard? Barely a month after Sharon decided to bless others, she found out that she had kidney stones.

Worried and anxious about the possibility of a medical operation, she doubted if she was physically and financially ready for this challenge.

In the midst of her uncertainty, Sharon was reminded that God is her great healer. She decided to remain prayerful, faithful and committed to her calling.

“I told my husband that in spite of what we are going through, we will continue to help God’s ministry,” Sharon said.

Little did she know, she was up for a miracle.

Just weeks after she prayed, the kidney stones were flushed out of her body! It meant two things: she no longer needed a medical operation and she just received God’s miraculous healing.

Is there Blessing in Giving?

Sharon exclaimed, “Yes, Lord! We are forever grateful to You for Your healing touch.”

Exceedingly grateful for God’s faithfulness, Sharon’s generosity increased. She and her husband happily gave more than what they initially pledged to Operation Blessing.

Truly, God is the source of provision, healing, and life.

No one can ever outgive God, and Sharon’s story is wonderful proof of this fact. Blessings followed after Sharon and her husband blessed others with their giving. Business opportunities opened for their family; her husband was promoted to a managerial role.

And that’s not all. “We have been praying for a baby and because God is so faithful, He gave us one!” Sharon shared. “We are so happy and thankful, and we will never forget the outpour of blessings we received from Him.”

Is there Blessing in Giving?

Even in a pandemic, God’s divine sustenance never fails to amaze the couple. Sharon and Jovenal found God’s peace during these trying times – the ultimate blessing they receive whenever they give.

And if like them, you want to experience the blessing that comes from giving, the couple has a message for you:

“This pandemic is the time where we can show our gratitude to God. One way of showing how thankful we are is to give. Learn to share. Do not worry for tomorrow for we cannot fathom His plans for us.”

Is there Blessing in Giving?

Are you blessed by this story?

Do you also want to experience the blessing in giving, but you do not know where to start?

Here’s How You Saved a Construction Worker’s Family from Hunger and Hopelessness

Here’s How You Saved a Construction Worker’s Family from Hunger and Hopelessness

Life during the pandemic is not easy, especially when you are forced to leave the job that feeds your whole family.

This is what our Aeta brother Rudy Dela Cruz experienced.

Rudy belongs to a tribal community in Tayabas, Quezon, and found a job as a construction worker in Barangay Putingkahoy, in Rosario, Batangas. Nearing age 60, Rudy still endured the heavy labor, for very little pay.

Life was already hard for their indigent family, but as soon as the pandemic razed the country, the father of four had to stop doing construction work.

“When I stopped doing construction work, what I did was to scythe bamboos. It was the only way I get to feed my four children. Then this pandemic hit us hard and we cannot even buy canned sardines,” Rudy recalled.

Can you imagine what it means to not afford food for your children?

Rudy can. And he realized that life had gotten even harder than before. No matter how many bamboos he scythes in a day, it is never enough to buy food for the whole family.

“We have no choice but to depend on the assistance we can get from the government or other people,” he lamented. He felt hopeless wondering how he can feed his hungry children in the coming days.

Through your help, Rudy’s family, and many other residents of Rosario received much-needed food items. The team also prayed for the beneficiaries and encouraged hope among the families.

Rudy is grateful for the glimpse of hope you shared in the time he needed it most.

“This is a huge blessing to people like us who have no access to food because of the pandemic. Thank you so much for the timely response to our needs,” he said.

Rudy is just one of our many kababayans who live from day to day, hoping for more food tomorrow. Truly, the pandemic has affected our present situation, but we are not giving up on a better future!

clean water for kababayans

Your Giving Creates Ripples of Hope for Families through Clean Water!

Dirty, unsafe, and filled with diapers.

This is how Julie Francisco described the water that they get from a nearby river in their town in Rodriguez, Rizal.

clean water beneficiary

Yet, they would still bathe in it, cook with it, and drink it because they have no choice.

Julie’s family and many other residents of the Sierra Madre do not have access to clean water because they live in a remote area. They have no choice but to drink the unfiltered water directly or boil it for the kids.

The dirty river is their only source of water, but when it became filled with garbage, the residents dug a small well near it – hoping that the water that comes from it would be safer to drink.

your donation gives clean water

However, it did not change anything. No matter how many times they try to purify the yellowish liquid, their efforts seem pointless.

“As a parent, I can bear all these burdens, but I cannot stand seeing my children suffer like that,” Julie said, bursting into tears.

It is no wonder why Julie’s children always get sick. And when she brought her eldest to the hospital due to diarrhea, it was clear that the lack of clean, potable drinking water imposed great danger not just to their family, but to their whole community.

“That time, I could not think straight. I prayed, ‘Lord, please take care of us,’ because I know nothing is impossible with God. He is our only hope,” Julie shared.

Thanks to your faithful partnership with Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines, CBN Asia’s humanitarian arm, God answered Julie’s prayer.

When a well is drilled, lives change. This saying came to life when Operation Blessing visited their community in Rodriguez before the pandemic and built a well. For the first time, they can enjoy safe drinking water!

During the pandemic, Julie and her neighbors do not have to worry about getting sick because of dirty water. Her children do not get sick anymore.

She overflowed with joy and thanksgiving, believing that God helped them get access to clean water through the generous hearts of Operation Blessing partners.

“You gave us hope! Now, we can fetch water that is safe to use in our household. My children don’t get confined in hospitals due to diarrhea, not anymore,” Julie said.

She continued, “You still reached us even though we live far from you. This well is a huge help. Thank you so much, Operation Blessing!”

From Babysitting to Teaching Operation Blessing Scholar Achieves her Dream through Your Help! 5

From Babysitting to Teaching: Operation Blessing Scholar Achieves her Dream through Your Help!

“Stand up and keep going.”

These are the words that Rhizza Mayor repeats to herself whenever she faces obstacles in life. Becoming a teacher is her lifelong dream, but it was never an easy journey.

One roadblock came after another. Her parents separated when she was young, her beloved father died due to diabetes, and they had no money to sustain her schooling. Finishing college was an elusive dream even though her mother worked hard to make ends meet.

But she stood up and kept going. Rhizza took up Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English at Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology.

To support her aspiration of becoming an educator someday, she worked as a babysitter and sometimes, a pump assistant in a gasoline station. By night, she would attend her classes.

“If you have a dream, no matter how hard it takes to reach it, even when you’re tired – you will just cry for a while but you will stand up and keep going. My mother is my motivation to strive so I can graduate.”

She knew that the road toward her dream was long and winding, but Rhizza never hit the brakes. She prayed and held on to her faith that one day, God will send a miracle.

And He did.

With the support of their local church, Rhizza became a Back-to-School scholar of Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines, CBN Asia’s humanitarian arm.

Back-to-School is Operation Blessing’s scholarship program which aims to provide educational assistance to underprivileged yet deserving students like Rhizza so they can continue their education even during challenging times.

“Put God first in your life. Make Him the center of your heart and do not lose hope because He is willing to help you,” she shared to scholars like her.

The young Nueva Ecijano partnered her prayers with perseverance, and after 4 long years, she reached her destination. Last September 2020, Rhizza finally earned a bachelor’s degree.

“We’ve been looking for scholarship for too long. Then came Operation Blessing, which offered a great scholarship and helped me finish my studies. My heart is overflowing with gratitude! Even during the pandemic, they brought us relief. I am so thankful that I got the best scholarship,” she recalled.

While preparing for the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) to become a full-fledged professional teacher, she now works as a home-based call center agent.

“To the people who donate to Operation Blessing, thank you so much! You are a blessing to us! You are part of fulfilling my dream,” Rhizza ended.

Through your generous giving, Operation Blessing can support and empower the future educators of our country. Through your compassionate heart, these young people can now have access to quality education!

For Our Pandemic-Hit Kababayans, Your Giving is a Blessing!

When an Operation Blessing volunteer handed over food bags to Rosemarie Fajardo last week, she cannot help but become emotional.

04222021_For Our Pandemic-Hit Kababayans, Your Giving is a Blessing!_1

Rosemarie and her family are among the tens of thousands of Filipino households who needed immediate relief right after the government declared another Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) in different areas including the province of Rizal.

The ECQ brings safety for many, but to Rosemarie’s family, it means more days of enduring hunger.

04222021_For Our Pandemic-Hit Kababayans, Your Giving is a Blessing!_2

“We struggled a lot since the COVID-19 arrived, especially because my son suffered from a brain tumor and underwent operation when the pandemic first hit the country. His blindness was also an added burden to him,” the mother of 5 recalled.

Taking care of a child with a medical condition and wondering how to feed her other 4 children, Rosemarie struggled to make ends meet. They slipped deeper into uncertainty, waiting to find the light at the end of the tunnel.

Through your selfless giving, a ray of hope came through!

With the help of Operation Blessing’s faithful partners like you and the DLL/SAGAD Off-Roaders group, pandemic-hit families in Barangay Canumay, in Antipolo, Rizal received the rice, canned goods, and other food items that would last for a week.

Apart from the material relief they received, the residents were also blessed to hear the comforting, saving love of Jesus through the team. Rosemarie and their whole community received the message that there is hope and light amid any crisis.

Pandemic-hit Families Continue to Endure Hunger, Here’s How You Can Help

When President Rodrigo Duterte announced another enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Metro Manila and surrounding areas, many people flocked to their local markets to buy food and other essential items for their families.

But to some, panic buying is a privilege they do not have.

04082021_04082021_Pandemic-hit Families Endure Hunger, Here’s How You Can Help_1

Such is the case for Jennily Non and her family who reside in Montalban, Rizal.

To the mother of 7 kids including a triplet, life was already a struggle long before COVID-19 came. Jennily and her husband make a living by scavenging a dumpsite in Montalban. No matter how hard they try to make ends meet, the quarantine forced them to stay at home and endure hunger.

04082021_04082021_Pandemic-hit Families Endure Hunger, Here’s How You Can Help_2

And now that another baby is on the way, they find it even harder to survive each passing day.

“Because of the ECQ, we cannot go outside to work and earn money to feed our children. We did everything, we even borrowed money, but we really do not know where to seek help anymore,” Jennily lamented.

Jennily’s family – and many other kababayans who are among the poorest – plunge deeper into poverty as the pandemic ensues.

04082021_04082021_Pandemic-hit Families Endure Hunger, Here’s How You Can Help_3

They are in addition to what National Economic and Development Authority Acting Secretary Karl Chua noted in an interview with CNN, saying that 3.2 million people in Metro Manila are hungry while 506,000 individuals remain jobless.

It seems like even though they persevere, they are caught between following strict quarantine measures and starving.

“As a mother, it hurts that I cannot provide the needs of my children. There are lots of sleepless nights. Because I work all day, there are lots of times when I would stay up all night to fill my shortcomings as a parent,” Jennily said, as tears streamed down her face.

04082021_04082021_Pandemic-hit Families Endure Hunger, Here’s How You Can Help_4

That’s why it was a huge help when Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines, CBN Asia’s humanitarian arm, visited their community and brought much-needed relief.

Each family received hygiene kits, clothes, and food items that would last for a week. More than the material relief, the beneficiaries received the message of hope and bayanihan in times of crisis.

“We are very happy and thankful to know that there are people who are willing to help us. It’s a huge relief for us because we do not need to worry where to get food in the coming days,” Jennily said with a huge smile.

While your generosity has reached thousands of families in need, there are still more who are reeling from the pandemic’s overwhelming impact – especially those who are below the poverty line.

Do you have an Attitude of Gratitude Here are 3 Ways to Express it

Do you have an Attitude of Gratitude? Here are 3 Ways to Express it

Are you ready for the year 2020 to be done?

After all that has happened – from the threat of volcanic eruption to a deadly pandemic, the aftermath of the back-to-back typhoons to the loss of your livelihood even loved ones – you might have muttered, “Can this year end already?

Is it possible to be thankful to God in the midst of all the troubles and challenges you face? Indeed, it is.

The Bible says, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV).

Being grateful is not ignoring nor dismissing the raw feelings of hurt and hardship you have at the moment. According to Dr. David Murray in his article featured in Tabletalk Magazine, the key to being grateful is in finding cause for thanksgiving whatever circumstances we are in.

Moreover, gratitude isn’t just a word – it is an action word. You start, you go and you give with thanksgiving in your heart. Gratitude expresses your faith and here are some ways to demonstrate it:

  1. Start with a smile

Isn’t it amazing to start your day with a bright smile and thank God for the gift of life?

It is good to note that despite all the chaos, you are still here – breathing and living the moment. You have food to eat, the roof above your head, and a chance to spend time with your loved ones. Those are more than enough reasons to smile and thank God for His goodness, faithfulness, and love!

Smile, look around you and see how it would positively affect others and set the atmosphere right. Psychological Science says that smiling can help reduce the intensity of the body’s stress response, so use it as an opportunity to display God’s kindness and glorify Him!

  1. Go and thank someone

When was the last time you sincerely thanked someone? When was the last time you actually stopped and appreciated the people around you?

Maybe you need to go and thank the cleaner in your office who keeps your space clean, the delivery man who brought your item just in time, or your spouse who constantly makes you a cup of coffeePerhaps, you need to say ‘thanks’ to a friend who checks up on you or your parents. Thank people for simply existing and blessing you with their lives!

Utter some words of appreciation and see how their faces would light up!

  1. Give and bless someone

It is one thing to survive a crisis and another to thrive in the aftermath of it. One way to show gratitude for what you have and show empathy to people who lost their jobs or loved ones is to bless them.

Know how it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35c NIV). You can be a blessing by serving free meals, raising funds for affected families, or partnering with organizations that bring relief and encouragement to kababayans in need.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.” (Psalm 100:4-5 NLT)

The attitude of gratitude does not mean denying your own needs or feelings. It is boldly believing that the storms won’t last. It is holding on to that faith that no matter what happens, your Heavenly Father is ready to take you through – with sustenance, love, and grace.

Are you looking for ways to demonstrate gratefulness and gratitude? You can partner with us today in bringing hope and aid to our kababayans!

If you need someone to pray for you, do not hesitate to call the CBN Asia Prayer Center at 8737-0700 and we would love to stand with you through prayers.
