Indigenous communities are already experiencing hunger and poor access to healthcare and other essential services even before the COVID-19 outbreak happened.

In fact, the United Nations reports that indigenous people are nearly 3 times as likely to be living in extreme poverty as their non-indigenous counterparts.

The current pandemic made their condition much, much worse.

The Dumagat Remontado tribe residing in Brgy. Lumutan, General Nakar, Quezon, was among those greatly affected. The virus poses graver health threat to their families while lockdowns in some parts of the country also prevent them from continuing with their livelihoods.

To help alleviate their suffering, CBN Asia’s humanitarian arm, Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines partnered with the Philippine Army, IBC Diliman Outreach, and DLL/SAGAD Off-Roaders Group and braved the narrow and slippery roads of Quezon just to reach the far-flung area.

Over 200 families received much-needed food bags and hygiene kits – which include sanitation supplies such as tissue paper, sanitary napkins, and diapers for babies. 

Operation Blessing also gave solar panels to Brgy. Lumutan to aid their need for electricity.

“This food bag is a big blessing to us,” says 24-year-old Marife Mendoza. Marife and her family would steam bananas and sweet potatoes just to put food on their table.

She added, “Because of our poor condition, most of us are illiterate. In my case, I was not even able to finish Grade 1. I have 3 kids now and we basically just depend on the crops we plant for food. My husband, who is a barangay officer, sometimes earns extra money as a hauler but it is still not enough for our daily needs.”

Intense flooding. Heavy rains. Trees and posts toppled by violent winds. Displaced families. Destroyed boats, infrastructures, and fields.

That is what Typhoon Ambo’s aftermath looks like.

Typhoon Ambo left families reeling from the impact. After wreaking havoc in Eastern Samar last May 14, thousands of families lost their homes and livelihoods.

At the same time, the health risks brought by the current pandemic made the situation even more challenging for the affected individuals. They were forced to move to evacuation centers while observing social distancing and other safety measures.

Battered by a calamity while facing a health crisis, the survivors struggled to cope and see hope.

That is why it’s a huge relief for them when CBN Asia’s humanitarian arm, Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines (OB), reached their community and brought much-needed food items.

Because of your unfaltering support, hundreds of kababayans in Barangays Natividad, Cahagwayan, and Baras in San Policarpio, Eastern Samar received food supplies. San Policarpio was the first to brave Typhoon Ambo’s impact when it made its first landfall in the town, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

The residents have been coping with the wet “palay” (unhusked rice) due to heavy rains and strong winds that ravaged their fields, and your timely giving provided them food for the next few weeks.

Furthermore, the OB team in Tacloban mobilized help and provided food assistance to families in Barangays Tawagan, Relocation, Paypayon in Oras, Eastern Samar.

As soon as the government declared the quarantine, many kababayans rushed to their home provinces to be with their families.

However, such was not the case for Alnajal Jalmaani.

Alnajal is one of the trainees of Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) who got stranded in a dormitory in Manila because of the Luzon-wide quarantine. 

“We were advised to standby. In case the processing of our application resumes, we would be able to report to training by then,” Alnajal shares.

While stuck in their dorm, Alnajal and his co-trainees started feeling restless about their condition. They received no financial help nor support as all their relatives are in Mindanao. They do not know where to seek help for food and some other basic needs. In addition to those burdens, they are really concerned about their families in the province.

“It’s very difficult for all of us, especially to me who doesn’t have a source of income here. I’m also worried about my family in Mindanao. I don’t know who can help me here,” he expressed.

Aside from food insecurity, they are also anxious about their health and safety in case they need to seek food or help outside their dormitory.

That is why it is a huge relief for Aljanal and his co-trainees when the Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines (OB) heard about their condition. Operation Blessing immediately visited their dorm and provided much-needed food packs, hygiene kits, and other essential commodities to help alleviate their difficult condition.

“Although we will still be stranded here for quite a while, what Operation Blessing has given us is a huge help to us. Everyone in our boarding house was given relief items, and we are very grateful to Operation Blessing for reaching out to us,” Alnajal said, smiling behind his face mask.

They also received prayers and words of encouragement from the Operation Blessing team to help uplift their spirits. They realized that it is God who sees and will provide for their needs, as said in the Bible:

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)

Livelihoods were lost, lives have been claimed, and people were robbed of their peace.

Without a doubt, the current pandemic has brought a serious impact on the lives of the Filipino people. Furthermore, the shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) and preventive care kits adds to the burden of frontliners who have been working hard to fight the battle.  

To help lessen the plight of kababayans, the Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines (OB), CBN Asia’s humanitarian arm, continues to provide much-needed PPEs and preventive care kits to selfless health workers who are fighting the threat of COVID-19 and its further spread. 

“The preventive care kits you gave mean a lot to us frontliners, even to security guards and caregivers who directly handle patients in our Emergency Room triage. It’s a big help, now that we cannot get PPEs due to lack of suppliers,” shared Pocholo Yamsuan, an Infection Control Nurse at Mary Chiles Hospital and Maternity. 

Face masks, alcohol, soaps, and vitamins to help boost their immune system, are just some of the contents of the preventive care kits given away to hundreds of medical, military, and police frontliners. Not only that, OB also gave out preventive care kits to patients, farmers, daily wage earners, delivery crew, local government personnel, indigenous groups, PWDs, street kids, and homeless individuals who were greatly affected by the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ.) 

“I am happy with what Operation Blessing has given us. These will surely help us, especially now that we’re affected by the ECQ. Our family doesn’t have enough money to buy things to protect ourselves,” expressed Gina Densing, a patient in one of the hospitals OB catered for.

The beneficiaries also received prayers and words of encouragement from the OB team to remind them of the comforting and saving love of God amid any crisis. 

The shortage of PPEs is real, but hope and our Filipino spirit of bayanihan are stronger!

The world’s health systems have never been more challenged than now due to COVID-19.

Although the world’s attention is fixated on the current pandemic, people – including you – are still at risk of other health problems. One of those health risks is malaria infection.

This World Malaria Day, know that zero malaria starts with you. Here’s what you can do:

1. Stay informed

You can remain protected from this disease by knowing what malaria is and how to prevent it.

According to the World Health Organization, malaria is a life-threatening mosquito-borne disease. It is caused by parasites transmitted by infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.

Although preventable and curable, the Outreach Network for Gene Drive Research reports that malaria kills 400,000 people per year, and 228 million cases were registered worldwide in 2018.

Keep your loved ones safe by practicing ways of malaria prevention, especially avoiding mosquito bites. Also, helping spread the word about its prevention is a lifesaving act.

2. Protect health workers

Research published in The Lancet Journals tells that during the outbreak of another disease in Africa, deaths from other causes like malaria rose because of overwhelmed health services and deaths of healthcare workers.

That is why in any season, supporting health workers is important.

For weeks now, the nation has been obliged to live a life of “new normal” amid COVID-19.

Vulnerable families and individuals were greatly affected by the pandemic. Some lost their jobs; others lost their loved ones.

Health workers and other frontliners are risking their lives with hopes of saving one.

You can help them by supporting CBN Asia’s humanitarian arm, Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines (OB), in the fight against COVID-19.

Here are some of the moments captured by the OB Team when they reached out to public and private hospitals and vulnerable communities all around the country:

“We’re very much grateful because we know how critical the situation is, yet you still remembered us here living in the mountains,” said Felix Acayin, while looking into the contents of the food pack they received from OB. Their family is part of the Dumagats, an indigenous group residing in Rizal, OB is reaching out to through its Bless-A-Child program.

Food packs were also given to the deaf and mute kababayans in Parañaque. Aside from nourishment to the body, they also received prayers and words of encouragement to help uplift their spirits!

Operation Blessing also paid a visit to the Victory Fort Bonifacio in Taguig that serves as a temporary housing facility for frontline healthcare workers who live far from the hospital where they work.  

Health workers from St. Luke’s Medical Center in BGC and Rizal Medical Center received preventive care kits which includes soap, face shield, face mask, and alcohol.

Meanwhile, this crisis has also taught the people that service workers are one of the most important workforces. They cannot afford to get sick at a time like this so Operation Blessing handed over preventive care kits to these unsung heroes, to help protect and boost their immune system.

The Armed Forced of the Philippines, guards, and volunteers who were manning the checkpoints also received preventive care kits and oranges from our partner, NICE inContact.

Farmers who find it difficult to take their produce to the market due to the quarantine are also having a hard time feeding their own families.

Because of your continuous support, a group of farmers in Tuy, Batangas received food packs and preventive care kits that they can bring home to their families.

Aside from them, social workers in Valenzuela who are dedicated to assisting families-in-need also received their share of blessing.

They received preventive care kits to ensure their protection so that they can continue to serve those who need their helping hands. 

Barangay workers from Zone 75 in Manila were also given preventive care kits. They, too, are frontliners who provide immediate services to the community.

Gary Valenciano raised over 6 million pesos during his two-day Facebook Live concert, “Gary V: HOPEFUL,” organized to support front liners and communities deeply affected by COVID-19, through Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines (OB) and Shining Light Foundation.

Gary V also serenaded thousands of viewers with his hit single, “How Did You Know” and surprised all viewers with a duet with his daughter Kiana for “What More Can I Say” and Regine Velasquez-Alcasid for “Each Passing Night.”

The hitmaker also brought hopeful messages amid the global pandemic through his songs, “Ililigtas Ka Niya,” much-requested “The Warrior Is A Child,” and “Take Me Out of the Dark,” before concluding his concert with a prayer.

With all the support his fundraising anniversary concert received, Gary V offered heartfelt gratitude to everyone who watched and donated.

“This is not even about Gary V. It’s not,” he shared. “It’s everything that has to do with what I’m standing for. Through this, hopefully, I can instill a little hope in the hearts of those who might seem hopeless.”

As families were obliged to stay at home amid the COVID-19 crisis, the Extended Community Quarantine (ECQ) has left thousands of Filipinos unsure where to get their next meal.

To lessen the plight of kababayans who are greatly affected by the crisis, Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines (OB), CBN Asia’s humanitarian arm, continues to extend help to medical frontliners, jobless families, and informal settlers from various parts of the country.

Last week, families in Payatas, Quezon City received much-needed food packs which include supplies that could last for a week.

Unable to work while taking care of both parents, Arlene Gayo, one of the beneficiaries, shared her gratitude after OB reached out to their community.

“We are being challenged in terms of finances. I was supposed to get a job, but because of my asthma, I had to postpone it to protect myself from the virus. I had to help my parents who are both senior citizens. My father needs medical sustenance for his asthma, diabetes and high blood. Help hasn’t reached us until now and I thank God because Operation Blessing remembered the families here in Payatas,” Arlene said.

OB also sent relief to a group of individuals who were stranded in a small dormitory in Manila.

The group, who flew all the way from Zamboanga to Camp Crame to become part of the police force, were prevented from traveling back to Mindanao because of the quarantine.

Likewise, OB reached out to children who are considered some of the most vulnerable during a crisis. The team provided food supply, vitamins, and preventive kits to street kids of Church on the Streets and the Alleys.

Moreover, informal settlers at North Cemetery received food packs and preventive kits yesterday through Kapatiran-Kaunlaran Foundation Inc. They, along with families from Lower Bicutan, Taguig who also received food packs, are among the thousands of individuals financially challenged by the pandemic.

 

“Since almost all work opportunities have disappeared during the ECQ, our beneficiaries are extremely grateful to OB and to our donors for stepping in the gap. In these times of desperate need, people are worried and scared of getting sick of COVID-19. Having nothing to eat adds such a heavy toll on them,” shared Robert John Tan, CBN Asia’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

He also added that the beneficiaries, who do not have access to food through their local government, are grateful for the help given, “OB’s grocery bags are received with so much gratitude. We praise the Lord that He can use OB and all our donors to be such a blessing during these critical moments!”

On the other hand, frontliners continue to receive aid from Operation Blessing’s nonstop relief operations.

Consuming 80-100 Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) per day as they battle against the spread of COVID-19, medical workers in the Lung Center of the Philippines are in grave need of more protective gear.

Through your generous giving, they received PPEs and preventive kits that will ensure their safety, as well as the Armed Forces of the Philippines-Medical Center, Manila Doctors Hospital, and other hospitals in Quezon City, Manila, and Marikina.

The Operation Blessing also prayed for the selfless frontliners, with hopes of providing comfort and encouragement during these trying times.

In addition, hospitals outside the metro such as the Ospital ng Biñan, Batangas Provincial Hospital, San Luis Rural Health Center, Bauan General Hospital, Lobo Municipal Hospital, and several checkpoints along the way also received PPEs and hygiene kits, with the help of Philippine National Army.

Today, the team flies to Davao to distribute PPEs and preventive kits to the brave frontliners in Mindanao. With the help of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the protective gear is transported through its C295 aircraft.

When you give, more frontliners and vulnerable kababayans can continue their courageous fight against COVID-19. 

Since March 22, CBN Asia’s humanitarian arm, Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines (OB), has been distributing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), preventive care kits, and vitamins to hospitals and families who are severely affected by the pandemic. 

Many of the medical personnel, security enforcers, and families of the patients in Ospital ng Muntinlupa, Silang Specialist Medical Center, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo Medical Hospital, and Pagamutan ng Dasmariñas received their much-needed PPEs and preventive care kits.

Amid the enhanced community quarantine, hundreds of underserved Filipinos were left jobless and unsure of where to get their next meal. With hopes of lessening their worries, OB also visited several churches in Antipolo City and distributed packs of rice to its residents last March 28. 

OB is ramping up its food distribution efforts to help more families get by during a difficult time such as this. 

Also, OB, in its mission to serve the underprivileged, also reached out to the vulnerable pregnant and lactating women in Novaliches District Hospital. Last March 30, the mothers and soon-to-be mothers received preventive care kits with handwashing soaps and isopropyl alcohols to help protect them from COVID-19. 

Aside from giving them preventive care kits, OB also prayed for the pregnant and lactating mothers, and their babies to help ease their distress and anxiety. 

The team also prayed for the families in need in Payatas, Quezon City after giving them food packs, which consist of rice, canned goods, milk, safe drinking water, hygiene kits, and other much-needed items. 

Apart from the material help, OB did not forget to extend the help that our kababayans would never run out of – the hope and comfort that can only be found in Jesus.

“I am genuinely happy that Operation Blessing has reached us. I was not expecting this kind of help. I just cry to the Lord so that we won’t lose hope,” expressed Arlie Labaranza, one of the beneficiaries from Payatas. 

All these were possible because of the continuous generosity of OB and CBN Asia partners like you and the tireless support of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). They, too, are frontliners and are needing protective gears to secure the safety of the people.

It was in 2016 when doctors told Uldarico Laroa that his lungs were not working well. During that time, his condition wasn’t properly explained to him.

It was an unexplainable illness, they said, and Uldarico can only remember having breathing problems and coughing up blood.

“My condition wasn’t properly explained to me. I was so confused, and I was losing hope,” Uldarico recalled, fighting back tears as he reminisced one of the painful times in his life. 

Uldarico’s family is part of the Eskaya Tribe, an indigenous group residing in the mountainous regions of Bohol. To see a doctor, they endured hiking down the rough trails for long hours. That is why when he suffered from the unexplained illness, Uldarico’s only source of courage in the midst of uncertainty and hopelessness were prayers. 

God answered him when Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines (OB), CBN Asia’s humanitarian arm, visited their community in Canta-ub, Sierra Bullones, Bohol and conducted a medical mission, dubbed as #OperationBlessBohol. 

During the medical mission, Uldarico received a free consultation with one of the volunteer doctors and nurses. They found out that he has Bronchiectasis. 

“Tatay Uldarico’s case is called Bronchiectasis. It is a permanent distortion of airways caused by an infectious procedure. Based on his X-ray results, we confirmed that his lungs are damaged by Tuberculosis, his underlying medical condition,” explained Dr. Silverose Agustin.

According to Uldarico, it was the first time that a doctor took time and compassionately explained his illness, “I was enlightened because the OB volunteer doctor explained it very well. Now that I know my real condition, I know how to take care of my health.” 

Aside from the free consultation, he also received free medicines and vitamins to further support his medication. After receiving much-needed care, Uldarico also surrendered all his worries to God as the team prayed for him. 

“The Lord answered our prayers and sent Operation Blessing to check on us and provide our medical needs. I’m happy and thankful that even though we’re too far away from the town, you cared to reach us,” Uldarico ended. 

Uldarico is just one of the thousands of Filipinos who suffer from Tuberculosis. According to the World Health Organization, Tuberculosis is preventable and curable, yet TB patients still face discrimination and financial challenges, alongside the health risks.
