Filipino Bayanihan: Stronger than Any Typhoon, Greater than Any Pandemic

Intense flooding. Heavy rains. Trees and posts toppled by violent winds. Displaced families. Destroyed boats, infrastructures, and fields.

That is what Typhoon Ambo’s aftermath looks like.

Typhoon Ambo left families reeling from the impact. After wreaking havoc in Eastern Samar last May 14, thousands of families lost their homes and livelihoods.

At the same time, the health risks brought by the current pandemic made the situation even more challenging for the affected individuals. They were forced tmove to evacuation centers while observing social distancing and other safety measures.

Battered by a calamity while facing a health crisis, the survivors struggled to cope and see hope.

That is why it’s a huge relief for them when CBN Asia’s humanitarian arm, Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines (OB), reached their community and brought much-needed food items.

Because of your unfaltering support, hundreds of kababayans in Barangays Natividad, Cahagwayan, and Baras in San Policarpio, Eastern Samar received food suppliesSan Policarpio was the first to brave Typhoon Ambo’s impact when it made its first landfall in the town, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

The residents have been coping with the wet “palay” (unhusked rice) due to heavy rains and strong winds that ravaged their fieldsand your timely giving provided them food for the next few weeks.

Furthermore, the OB team in Tacloban mobilized help anprovided food assistance to families in Barangays Tawagan, Relocation, Paypayon in Oras, Eastern Samar.

Continue to be an instrument of hope and comfort to our kababayans!

Aftermath: What Happens to Taal Eruption Survivors Now? | Operation Blessing

They lost their home and they lost all of their belongings. It’s as if they lost hope when they saw everything covered in ash.

Ginalyn Lacay and her 6 children never thought that they would face danger right at their own home.

They live in San Nicolas, Batangas, just a few kilometers away from the Taal Volcano itself.

The majestic view of the volcano and Taal Lake can be seen from outside their house. It’s so close that when the volcano spewed ash and caused a series of earthquakes last January 12, panic and fear crept into their hearts.

Ginalyn was left alone to care for the kids on her own while her husband was in Mindanao to attend a relative’s wake.

“When we noticed the ash coming out from the volcano, we were so nervous. That time, my only thought was to save all my children. When I saw my neighbors evacuating, I asked them if they could take me and my children,” the 35-year-old mother said.

Bringing only important documents and some clothes, the family immediately fled to a safe zone in San Luis, Batangas. The house, which they shared with 13 other evacuees, served as their temporary shelter for 2 weeks as the local government placed their town under complete lockdown.

Leah Jane, one of Ginalyn’s daughters, said that she would not forget the chaotic moment she and her little siblings had to endure, “I saw the huge smoke, the lightning, and I felt terrified because the earthquakes were really strong.” Being displaced for weeks and exposed to ash and freezing weather caused coughs and cold for Leah Jane and her 3 other siblings.

When their father learned about their condition, he immediately went home to rescue his family.

And as soon as the lockdown was lifted, they came back to San Nicolas to see if there’s anything left of their belongings. It broke their hearts to see that their totally damaged house sank to the ground, fully covered in ash. Almost everything was wiped out, even their basic household and health care items.

That’s why the family was very grateful when they heard about Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines’ medical mission and relief operations at San Nicolas Municipal Gym.

During the mission, Ginalyn’s kids received free checkup for the first time since the volcano’s unrest. They also took home medicines and hygiene kits.

Along with more than 200 other families in San Nicolas and Agoncillo, they also received relief goods package which contains a pail, dipper, kitchenware, and food items given during the house-to-house visits.

CBN Asia’s church partners also prayed for the survivors during the counseling, hoping to bring healing and peace not just for the body, but also, for the restless and worried souls.

Ginalyn’s family now rents a small house in a safer place, yet she still sees the help they received as a huge blessing. She expressed her appreciation to those who continue to support the survivors of Taal Volcano eruption, “When you prayed for us, I felt relieved. We’re very thankful for all your help. All these things mean a lot to us!”

Meanwhile, Binibining Pilipinas-Universe 1998 Jewel Lobaton joined OB’s relief efforts as a first-time volunteer. Seeing the need of the affected families firsthand, the beauty queen also shared how the resilient hearts of Batanguenos touched her.

“There were people in Agoncillo who received pails and relief goods from us. I saw hope in their eyes, in spite of everything they went through. No matter how hard life is for them, I could not feel bitterness. I could just sense how grateful they were and they’re genuine about it,” Jewel expressed.

She also encouraged everyone to continue giving as many other families still need help, “I really broke down into tears, thanking God for the experience. I now have all the inspiration and courage to tell my friends to help Operation Blessing. There is so much more to do in rehabilitating Taal victims and communities.”

Superbook Inspires the Children of Batangas to Hope Again

The province of Batangas was gravely affected when the Taal Volcano’s eruption began last January 12. When heavy ash clouds covered its towns and cities and earthquakes became more frequent, thousands of Batangueños were forced to leave their homes and move to the nearest evacuation centers.

“We’ve been here for almost two weeks,” said 8-year-old Monica whose family evacuated to Calumbang Elementary School. Although she has a lot of playmates in the evacuation center, Monica couldn’t help but feel sad and miss home.

According to studies, being displaced by natural disasters can cause a lot of stress and trauma to children. Reya Abreiu, Treasurer of Barangay Calumpang shares, “A lot of kids are crying and repeatedly expressing their desire to return home.”

Last Thursday, January 23, Superbook, in partnership with Operation Blessing, staged an event for children in Calumbang to minister, encourage, and help the kids process what they are going through. The kids played Superbook games, received goodies, and got the chance to sing and dance with their favorite robot friend, Gizmo.

One of the activities was a film showing of Superbook’s “Job” episode. Job lost his children and wealth in a series of calamities and tragedies, but he didn’t question God. Instead, Job chose to trust and love the Lord. Later, God restored Job and blessed him with a double portion of everything he had lost.

“I’ve learned not to blame God for bad situations. We should always pray to God and love Him with our whole heart,” said Monica.

Superbook has helped a lot! As you can see, the kids really had a lot of fun. It shifted their focus from our current situation. They were given hope to start again,” Reya shared.

The Taal eruption may have dampened the spirits of the children, but through Job’s story, they learned that there is a God they can trust and rely on. There is a reason to hope again.

Will Batangas get to Rise Again after the Taal Volcano Eruption?

Life in the evacuation area is not easy.

All of a sudden, you would have to live with people, mostly whom you have not met, from different places. You have to share rooms, comfort rooms, and bathrooms. You have to wait for relief goods if some would come. Life there is like keeping your hopes up in the midst of uncertainty.

Where will I live next? How do I start all over again?

These are just some of the questions that the evacuees have been asking in their hearts.

Filipinos displaced from various areas around Taal Volcano evacuated to temporary shelters after its eruption on January 12. Some started losing hope while others choose to look forward to a better tomorrow.

Angelito de Sagun from Taal, Batangas has nowhere else to go and does not have an idea as to how his home is doing by this time. They are not allowed to go back to their houses due to the dangers that the volcanic eruption has been bringing.

Zairone Castillo, with his son Zian Prince, from Lemery, Batangas does not know where life would bring them as it seems like they would not be allowed to go back to their home anymore. But then, he is wishing that things will start going back to normal and is thankful for the help that comes to them wherever they are.

Hygiene kits in eco-bags prepared by Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines (OB) that includes a mat, bath soaps, shampoos, detergent soaps, toothpaste, alcohol, sanitary pads, diapers for babies or toddlers, and a Bible, were distributed to evacuees in Rosario, Batangas.

People staying in evacuation areas in barangays San Isidro, Pinagsibaan, Baybayin, Timbugan, Bagong Pook, and Marilag received these temporary relief packs.

Every kit given sparked hope in the hearts of the Batangueños.

“Babangon ang Batangas? Babangon!” (Will Batangas rise again? It will!”) They exclaimed as they choose to look forward to a brighter future.

As they rise from the ashes that the volcanic eruption catastrophe brought them, you can help with repacking, sorting relief goods, offering assistance like driving and assisting with picking up donations, and bringing them to the Operation Blessing warehouse.
