Coronavirus is Here, What Can You Do?

2020 has just begun, yet most people are already tired from the events that befell our beloved nation and other countries – a catastrophic volcanic eruption, a war between countries, bush fires, death of a beloved sports icon, and now, the outbreak of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCov).

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2019-nCov is identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, China in December. Last January 30, the Philippines confirmed its first case – a 38-year-old woman who traveled to our country from Wuhan.

Panic and fear became very evident as the news broke.

Amidst this adversity, what can you do?

As medical professionals and governments do their best to stop the virus from spreading, here are ways on how you can respond:

1. Turn to Jesus. Focus on Him and put your trust in Him.

The noise of this world can sometimes be deafening. The anxiety this virus brings can be blinding. But, you can always trust Jesus Christ. He can give you peace and healing. Turn to Him and away from the ways of the world.

He made it clear in 2 Chronicles 7:14, “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

Seek His forgiveness and allow Him to cover you and change you. Then, be in faith that all things, including the seemingly devastating ones, will work together for good. Isn’t it comforting to know that what the enemy meant for harm, God can still turn into good?

2. Pray unceasingly.

Just as you are advised to proactively protect yourself from the virus, also ought to not stop praying during this time.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 encourages people to “pray without ceasing.” Nowadays, it’s so easy to get distracted by fear and disunity, or by arguments and blame games flooding your social media. Now is the best time to pause and ask God to give you a praying heart.

Pray for protection and peace of mind for you and your loved ones. Pray and believe that the Lord will heal the infected people and will comfort those who are in fear. Ask for wisdom for the nations’ leaders as they make huge decisions. Pray for the health workers as they courageously and selflessly risk their lives to serve others. Pray that God will bless every human with a compassionate and understanding heart.

In this battle against the world’s dark forces, let prayers be your first defense.

3. Reach out – with love.

When Jesus healed a man with leprosy, He modeled compassion. Ask God to give you the same heart that beats for the afflicted. Your compassion could show that afflictions, such as coronavirus, won’t destroy mankind but establish it.

Likewise, challenging times like these could easily make people hopeless, troubled, and divided. Still, God is so gracious for choosing you, His child, to be the salt and light of this world. (Matthews 5:13-14)

Knowing that you’re called for a greater purpose, don’t let fear and judgment cloud you. This adversity could be your opportunity to share Jesus and His saving power. Let your light shine so others may experience the kind of peace only God can bring. (keithmcquirter.com)

As January bids goodbye, the challenge continues. Continue to believe, pray and reach out to share the love and mercy of God!

Celebrating Chinese New Year? Here Are 3 Things To Remember

Chinese New Year or Spring Festival is well-celebrated in the Philippines.

Following the movement of the moon, it is observed either in January or February based on the lunar calendar where each year is represented by an animal sign known as the Chinese Zodiac, Alina Bradford explained in her article Chinese New Year: Customs & Traditions by Live Science.

Traditions, symbolism, and customs are hallmarked during this 15-day celebration which can leave many people confused about whether to participate in it or not.

To help you be enlightened, here are 3 things to remember as you celebrate the Chinese New Year.

1. Be careful not to join practices contrary to the Bible.

Take for example the traditional practices of worshipping deities and ancestors or trusting horoscopes to determine your destiny.

Be careful not to engage in magic spells, sorceries, omens, witchcraft, spells, spiritists who consults the dead. These are dangerous and detestable to God.

The Bible also commands us to refrain from idols because it is only God who must be worshipped and served.

2. Meditate on the Word of God.

There are many outside voices that will try to deceive, mislead, and snatch you away from the Truth planted in your heart.

Get yourself in God’s Word and continuously meditate on it (Joshua 1:8). Put on His full armor, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes (Ephesians 6:10).

3. Celebrate it in a way that glorifies God.

“Christians can eat, drink and be merry during the new year without any involvement in superstitious matters,” affirms Rev. Elijah in an article ‘Annual Debate’ on Chinese-Tradition and Christianity: Should Christians Celebrate Chinese New Year? by Elsie Hu published in China Christian Daily.

Seize the opportunity to share the Gospel with your loved ones who needed to hear the Word of God. Enlighten them with the Truth because they, too, need to experience the saving power of Jesus Christ. (Klonopin online)

Struggling to Save Money? Here are 3 Tips to Help You | Beyond Small Talk

What prevents you from saving?

Is it because you don’t have money left to save? Or do you feel like you’re still too young to save and think of the future?

Whatever your reasons are, step back and assess because you may be just using those as excuses.

According to a survey of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas in 2014 cited in an article 5 Reasons Filipinos Don’t Save Money by ABS-CBN News, “Philippines has one of the lowest savings rates in Southeast Asia.”

In this Beyond Small Talk webisode Best of 2019, hosts Marvin Germo, Randell Tiongson, and Peter Kairuz give you practical tips on how to save your hard-earned income and more.

1. Write down your expenses.

“Every peso should have a name,” says Marvin.

Don’t let your money control you. Listing and naming your expenses will help you track where your cash goes.

According to Miriam Caldwell in her article Why You Need to Track Expenses to Control Your Finances, tracking your expenses is useful because it creates financial awareness. It makes you conscious of your bad spending habits and allows you to budget wisely.

2. Change your bad money habits.

What are the bad money habits you need to give up today?

Unless you discipline yourself and give up impulse buying, personal vices, or overspending, you will never achieve your goal towards financial freedom.

3. Increase your income.

“God is our source. He can bless you through so many channels to bring the money to you,” Marvin said.

Aside from your 9-to-5 job, maximize your leisure time by finding other sources of income such as selling online or taking home-based jobs. But, take to heart that it has to be fused with the right skills and hard work in order for you to see the fruit of your labor.

Let God give you wisdom and direction on ways to earn through other means.

How to Develop your Prayer Life as a Man – Beyond Small Talk

“Real men pray.”

Have you heard of this phrase?

Your one-on-one with God is the most important relationship you should build as a man. When your priority is to seek Him first in all that you do, everything else will just follow.

Beyond Small Talk host, Erick Totañes says, “A man connected to God through prayer, discerns well, hears well, understands well, and lead their lives well and the family that they have.”

Check out these 5 practical tips on how you can develop your prayer life as a man.

1. Start with acknowledging God.

Jesus warns in Matthew 6:7 NKJV, “And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.”

Is this how you pray to God?

The right and effective way to approach Him is to begin by recognizing who He is. It is lifting up, exalting, and magnifying His Holy Name.

2. Pray with intentionality.

Do you pray because you want to deepen your connection with God or do you just want something from Him?

Check your heart because as far as God is concerned, He wants to have an intimate relationship with you and reveal to you the things He has prepared for you.

3. Choose a specific place to pray.

Have you found a special place where you can meet with God?

Yes, you can talk to Him anytime, anywhere, but God wants your full and undivided attention.

In Matthew 6:6 NIV it says, “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

4. Set aside a specific time of the day to pray to God.

Are you too busy to pray?

You can start with 5 minutes with God, as long as you make it a habit to spend time with Him. Before you know it, your foundation of the Word of God has gone stronger, and your relationship with Him sweeter. (https://www.pyramidtimesystems.com/)

5. Pray in the Name of Jesus.

Remember that it is through Jesus Christ that you have direct access to God.

Romans 5:10 NIV says, “For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!”

5 Fire Prevention and Safety Tips

March marks the start of the hot and dry season in the Philippines and the nationwide observance of Fire Prevention Month.

According to Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA), this month is considered one of the hottest months in the country where the temperature and humidity reach their maximum levels.

Plus, it is the period that has one of the most numbers of fire incident reports nationwide.

So, to keep you and your loved ones from danger during this fire-prone season, here are 5 fire prevention and safety tips that you can follow.

1. Plan.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), as cited by Rocelle Tangi of ABS-CBN News in an article entitled 15 tips to keep your house safe from fire, you need to “prepare a fire emergency plan at home or at the office.” Be aware of where to escape and evacuate in case of fire occurrence. Save the contact numbers of your local fire department.

2. Unplug electrical equipment when not in use.

Save lives and money on electricity bills by unplugging appliances and devices when not in use, says BFP. Moreover, secure your tangled cables using electrical tape and regularly replace old tapes.

3. Look for gas leaks.

“Use your nose. Look for leaks and signs of fumes and change the hose accordingly,” BFP explained. Always ensure adequate ventilation for your LPG tanks to keep the air fresh, safe, and healthy.

4. When a fire occurs, close the door of the burning area.

This will help stop the spread of fire, says the BFP as cited by Christian Aguilar of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) in an article entitled March is Fire Prevention Month. Avoid suffocation by breathing slowly and covering your nose and mouth using a wet cloth.

5. Do the “Stop, Drop, and Roll” if clothes catch fire.

Keep calm. Do not run or panic. Make sure that you shout for help or wave a cloth outside the window to give a signal to your neighbors, BFP advises.

Most importantly, always pray for your and your family’s safety and protection. God promises in Psalm 121:7-8 (NIV), “The Lord will keep you from all harm – he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”

5 Inspiring Women in the Bible – Happy Women’s Day!

As we celebrate the International Women’s Day, here are 5 women of God in the Bible. Learn how they embraced their higher calling and purpose.

“Sarah restored to Abraham” by Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677) from the University of Toronto Wenceslaus Hollar Digital Collection.

1. Sarah (Hebrews 11:11; 1 Peter 3:5-6)

Sarah is not perfect, but no matter how hard their journey was, she supported her husband Abraham and stayed by his side. This led to the fulfillment of God’s promise through them.

“Ruth swearing her allegiance to Naomi” by Jan Victors (1619-1676).

2. Ruth (Ruth 1:3-5;16-19;2:2-3;4:13-22)

Ruth’s faithfulness and hard work were rewarded by God as the Savior of the world belonged to her lineage.

After being widowed, she decided to journey with her mother-in-law, Naomi, and live in Judah. Unsure of what lies ahead of her, Ruth faithfully followed Naomi and worked hard daily. She gathered leftover grains in the field of who happened to be her “rescuer” or kinsmen-redeemer named Boaz, who later became her husband. They had a son named Obed.

Bible primer, Old Testament by Adolf Hult and Augustana Synod. Published by Rock Island III and Augustana Book Concern in 1919 from The Library of Congress.

3. Esther (Esther 4:14;7)

From being a Jewish maiden to being crowned queen of Persia, Esther became a great example of courage and faith when she saved her people from an annihilation plotted by Haman, King Xerxes’ wicked court official. Queen Esther was appointed for such a time as this to fulfill God’s purpose. She obeyed Him and stood for His people even if her life was put on the line.

“Deborah Praises Jael” 1866 by Gustave Dore from Dore’s English Bible

4. Deborah (Judges 4)

She was Israel’s only female judge. Deborah delivered the Israelites from the hand of Jabin and Sisera who cruelly oppressed them for 20 years. She accompanied Barak, a man of Napthali who led the war against Sisera, because he was too afraid to attack their enemies. Through Deborah’s wise leadership and unwavering faith, Israel was led to victory.

5. Mary, Mother of Jesus. (Matthew 1:18-25)

Mary gave her “yes” to God even when she knew that being unwed and pregnant in the Jewish culture means being stoned to death. Despite the danger she faced, she obeyed and trusted the Lord. Thus, the Savior of the world, Jesus Christ, was born.

These are not just stories of great women striving to achieve great things. But rather, stories of ordinary and imperfect women who had been faithful to God Almighty.

1 Peter 2:9 NIV says, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”

This is what God created you to be!

Lent: What Is It Good For?

CBN.com – The days of Lent are a time of meditation, fasting, and repentance. With the mercy of God shown through Christ’s sacrifice in full view, observers wage war against desires that may be contrary to God’s Word.

For 40 days and nights (not counting Sundays), Christians around the world take on a mantle of spiritual discipline as a way of deepening their faith in God. Observing Lent looks different for every believer, though fasting is usually a major factor. Some choose to fast in the traditional way, giving up a meal or certain types of foods. Others, after evaluating their lifestyle, determine to give up luxuries in order to focus more on their walk with our Heavenly Father, such as turning off the television or radio for Lent or cutting back on their sleep to devote the early morning hours to prayer and Scripture reading.

The options are endless. The important thing is to be obedient to the moving of the Holy Spirit and follow through on exercising self-control in the area God is touching His finger on in your life. Whatever you decide to give up make sure you are in line with what the Bible says about fasting. In the book of Matthew, we are encouraged to fast in “secret”.

“And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Matthew 6:16-18

Be careful that your motivation for fasting, and observing Lent for that matter, is to honor God and not to stoke your self-righteousness.

Just as the Son of Man resisted sin in the wilderness, purpose in your heart to remain steadfast during this time of consecration to God. Temptations come each day and will continue through this season, as it did during Christ’s wilderness testing, as recorded in the New Testament book of Mark.

And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts, and the angels waited on him. Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the Good News of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the Good News.” Mark 1:12-15

The Bible records many times when Jesus went away by himself and focused his attention on His Father, in Heaven. Lent is a set-aside time for us to do the same. As we fast and meditate on God’s Word, take hold of Joel 2.

Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and relents from punishing. Joel 2:12-13

Fasting is an integral part of observing Lent. For us, our self-pleasing nature will wage against our desire to deny ourselves. Stay strong to the calling you have in this season. God’s blessings are greater than the momentary pleasures we are giving up.

Mourning is part of the process as we remember Jesus’ death on the Cross, but it’s also a joyous time as we reflect on His resurrection. Our joy is found in Him. Let that be the lesson we all learn during this time of consecration.

Lent, what is it good for? Absolutely everything… that matters.

God’s goodness is better than what our human minds and hearts could ever imagine. | by Hannah Goodwyn, CBN.com Senior Producer
