Good Money Habits to Start This Year | Beyond Small Talk

Are you up for the challenge?

But before you startyou need to discipline yourself and make a decision to quit your old ways in handling money.

If you constantly fall into debt or you’re overspending to make yourself look rich for others, it’s time to make way for new financial habits

Take note that it’s not really about how much you earn but what you do with the money that comes your way and how you use it to work hard for you,” says Beyond Small Talk host’s Marvin Germo.

Listed below are good spending habits you can apply and learn from Beyond Small Talk’s Best of 2019 with hosts Marvin Germo, Randell Tiongson, and Peter Kairuz

1. Know yourself and identify your weaknesses.

What are your weaknesses when it comes to spending? Three-day sale at the mall? Food? Movies? Games? Vices?

Have an honest review of yourself.

When you become aware of your weaknesses, then you can make an action plan on how you can stay away from unnecessary expenses that distract you from your financial goals.

2. Practice “forced savings.”

Have a hard time saving?

Automate your savings.

Saving is now made easy. Every paycheck you can permit your bank to automatically transfer a certain amount from your income to your savings account.

3. Put your money in different accounts.

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

Diversify it.

This means “investing in different industries, areas, countries, and types of financial instruments to reduce the chance that all of the investments will drop in price at the same time,” according to Collins Dictionary

4. Practice delayed gratification

As defined by Britannica, this is the “act of resisting an impulse to take an immediately available reward in the hope of obtaining a more-valued reward in the future.”

It will not only help you reach financial freedom, it will also shape your attitude towards money and develop your personal character in the process.

If you think it’s too late to start saving, do not lose hope because what’s important is you START TODAY

Struggling to Save Money? Here are 3 Tips to Help You | Beyond Small Talk

What prevents you from saving?

Is it because you don’t have money left to save? Or do you feel like you’re still too young to save and think of the future?

Whatever your reasons are, step back and assess because you may be just using those as excuses.

According to a survey of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas in 2014 cited in an article 5 Reasons Filipinos Don’t Save Money by ABS-CBN News, “Philippines has one of the lowest savings rates in Southeast Asia.”

In this Beyond Small Talk webisode Best of 2019, hosts Marvin Germo, Randell Tiongson, and Peter Kairuz give you practical tips on how to save your hard-earned income and more.

1. Write down your expenses.

“Every peso should have a name,” says Marvin.

Don’t let your money control you. Listing and naming your expenses will help you track where your cash goes.

According to Miriam Caldwell in her article Why You Need to Track Expenses to Control Your Finances, tracking your expenses is useful because it creates financial awareness. It makes you conscious of your bad spending habits and allows you to budget wisely.

2. Change your bad money habits.

What are the bad money habits you need to give up today?

Unless you discipline yourself and give up impulse buying, personal vices, or overspending, you will never achieve your goal towards financial freedom.

3. Increase your income.

“God is our source. He can bless you through so many channels to bring the money to you,” Marvin said.

Aside from your 9-to-5 job, maximize your leisure time by finding other sources of income such as selling online or taking home-based jobs. But, take to heart that it has to be fused with the right skills and hard work in order for you to see the fruit of your labor.

Let God give you wisdom and direction on ways to earn through other means.
