Heartbreaks could be incredibly painful, but they are avoidable.
As you spend some quality time with God this Holy Week, learn how to also love yourself more from actress-host Coney Reyes. Here are 7 tips she shared on how to avoid getting heartbroken.
1. Honor your parents. Listen to them.
Ephesians 6:1-3 says, “Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. ‘Honor your father and mother.’ This is the 1st commandment with a promise. If you honor your father and mother, ‘things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.’”
Honor your parents by listening to their advice. Surely, they have gained wisdom from experience and their advice’s motive is to protect you from getting heartbroken.
2. Choose the right group of friends.
Don’t hang out with the wrong crowd. 1 Corinthians 15:33 says, “Bad company corrupts good character.”
Exercise wisdom and caution when choosing your friends.
3. Surround yourself with strong and upright people.
Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.”
Surround yourself with strong and upright people who will tell you the truth face to face. Be accountable to them.
4. Pray
Cry out to God in prayer. As Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
5. Read the Word.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 says that “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
6. Pray the Word.
Know the Word of God by heart and pray the promises of God written in it. More than declaring good things for yourself, this will prevent you from being deceived.
1 John 5:14-15 reminds us that “We are confident that He hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases Him. And since we know He hears us when we make our requests, we also know that He will give us what we ask for.”
7. Live the Word.
James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” You will live a blessed life if you hear the Word of God and obey it. Live out what you read about.
Coney admitted that she made a lot of ‘not-so-healthy’ and ‘not-so-godly decisions’ in the past that led to heartbreaks, but everything turned around when she accepted Jesus Christ in her heart.
“Though I was heartbroken, there were many people praying and fasting for me,” she said and quoted Romans 8:28, “God works things out for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.”
