7 Reasons Why Daily Devotions are “Essential”

What’s your favorite movie?

If you love a certain movie or show, there’s a chance that you have recommended it to your family and friends. You might have posted about it on social media or even shared the plot to convince others that it’s worth the watch!

However, no matter how much you tell people about how good that movie is, their appreciation can only go so far unless they actually watch the show.

The same concept applies to doing your devotions.

It’s not enough to hear about God through pastors, small groups, or something you watched online. To fully appreciate and know God, one must seek Him and meditate in His Word through daily devotions.

Daily devotional reading is very beneficial for you! Here are just some of the many reasons why doing daily devotions is an essential part of your spiritual life:

Reason #1: Daily devotions help build your faith

It is by hearing God’s Word that faith increases.

The Bible is packed with faith stories about God doing the impossible. To name a few, He turned water into wine, provided Manna to thousands of followers, healed the sick, raised the dead to life, parted the Red Sea and many more! (utopiamanagement.com)

So if your faith is being tested by troubles and you’re in doubt right now, reading Scriptures that talk about God’s miracles and faithfulness would help build your faith.

“Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.” (Romans 10:17 NIV)

Reason #2: Daily devotions draw you closer to God

Invite God to your heart and get to know Him through His Word. It is your confidence when storms of life come your way.

As you intentionally meet Him in your secret place, be assured that He will always meet you there.

“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (James 4:8 ESV)

Reason #3: Daily devotions help you focus on God

There can be a lot of distractions competing for your attention towards God.

The busyness of life may get you. And sometimes, even the good things such as goals and dreams can take His place in your life.

The world could entice you away from God but through daily devotional reading, God’s truth helps you focus on His plans and promises for your life.

“Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Romans 12:12 ESV)

Reason #4: Daily devotions encourage you to persevere in life

As you meditate on the accounts of people in the Bible like Moses, David, Mary, and most especially Jesus, you will discover how their lives are epitome of perseverance of faith.

Though they had a difficult time here on earth, they fought the good fight of faith not because they are strong but because God is with them. Your Heavenly Father can also give you the grace to persevere as you learn to surrender to Him daily.

“And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:1-2 NIV)

Reason #5: Daily devotions help you gain deeper understanding of the Bible

God’s Word has the final authority over your life.

The Bible is like a ruler that sets the standard to distinguish a crooked line from a straight one. As you study God’s Word diligently and discover His truth, the more it becomes easier for you to differentiate which ways to follow.

“You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me.” (John 5:39 NIV)

Reason #6: Daily devotions inspire you to apply God’s Word daily

Spending time with the Lord through daily devotional reading helps you apply Biblical principles that will be useful in life.

Whether you need wisdom, comfort, direction, correction, reproof, and training in righteousness, God’s word is always available. He teaches you to depend on Him and not on other voices or opinions.

“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” (Psalm 119:11 NIV)

Reason #7: Daily devotions give you peace and joy

Are you anxious about many things lately? Come to God daily and see what He has to say about your situation.

Relying on God’s Word and communing with Him through prayer can give you the kind of peace which surpasses all understanding. It gives an unshakable joy in the midst of difficulties.

“Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble.” (Psalm 119:165 NIV)
