Caring Hearts and Helping Hands URBIZTONDO, Pangasinan — The waters have already subsided, but the marks of the flood still remain. Trees and plants are covered with dried mud, and the walls of houses all have stains of the torrent that reached up to people’s chests.
As part of Operation Blessing’s disaster relief operations for victims of typhoon Pepeng in Pangasinan, OB reached out to areas where much-needed help has not yet been extended. One of these is Barangay Angatel, in this municipality.
This time, OB gathered more caring hearts and more helping hands.
Caring For The Elderly
A large percentage of Barangay Angatel’s population is comprised of children and the aged. Most of them felt the impact of typhoon Pepeng. Through OB’s disaster relief operation, they experienced what it is like to be blessed and to be cared for.
Tensa, 74, went to OB’s medical mission site with assistance from her neighbor. She tightly gripped her walker as she slowly moved towards the registration area.
Her back was so bent that her head almost leveled to her chest as she walked. Tensa has osteoporosis, and her chest pains are making it harder for her to walk and breathe.
“I’ve been suffering from this condition for years. I find it so hard to move even with my walker,” she sadly said. Her suffering was evident in her eyes.
With the help of an OB volunteer doctor, she was advised regarding her condition and was also given medicines for her chest pains.
“Thank you for bringing the doctor here in our place. I am very grateful to you,” she happily told OB.
Over 50 elderlies were helped through OB’s medical mission, relief distribution and trauma counseling. A feeding program for children was also conducted.
Joint Efforts
With help coming from the town mayor’s office, OB rallied enough manpower and needed vehicles to deliver relief goods to Barangay Angatel. Elements of the local police offered their services in ensuring the safety of the operation.
In addition, volunteers from different churches in Pangasinan came and helped. German doctors from Humedica International also joined the medical mission.
Nearly 250 families in Angatel were reached through the joint efforts and dedication to serve of OB and its volunteers.
