The
liver is a critical organ that cleanses blood and controls
fat in the body. But with today's high chemical and
artificial ingredient diets, the liver must cope with
many potentially destructive elements. Now, research
suggests that healthy liver maintenance is paramount
to our overall health.
Physician
Sandra Cabot struggled with several difficult medical
cases. While attempting to unravel the mystery surrounding
these cases, she began investigating the liver and determined
that, "The liver is the simple point of concentration
that has the most profound effect on the other parts
of the body."
Following
her research, she and several colleagues developed a
regimen for a healthy liver. She also wrote The Liver
Cleansing Diet, which serves as a blueprint for liver
health. In Australia, the book became a bestseller.
Though the title may suggest that it is a diet book,
Cabot points out, "It is a simple way people could
eat and include more of the foods that were good for
the liver."
As
part of her treatment for liver cleansing, Cabot sometimes
recommends supplements, specifically those that benefit
the liver, including the potent herb milk thistle, the
antioxidant alpha lipoic acid, as well as liver tonics
with a combination of ingredients.
She
says her approach works best preventively and often
helps those suffering with serious diseases like hepatitis.
"You can put that virus into a dormant state,"
she claims.
A
common but often overlooked condition that can even
affect children is fatty liver. Cabot explains it occurs
when the liver becomes a "warehouse for fat. A
healthy liver is a fat burner," she says. "Fifty
percent of people who are overweight have some degree
of fatty liver, particularly as they get older, and
that has a lot to do with the genesis of cardiovascular
disease which is the leading cause of death."
Cabot
maintains that good liver health may prevent and fight
many diseases in the early stages. "I'm trying
to make people understand that the liver needs to be
taken care of before you get to the stage of a liver
disease."
